GENERAL OBJECTIVE
An advanced workshop focused on the practice of the kora and the understanding and analysis of the Mandingue repertoire.
CONTENT

The role of the korafola (kora player) in Mandingue culture, from a historical and cultural perspective.

Study of kora tuning modes:
-
Silaba – meaning “the great road”, the main kora tuning, used throughout the Mandingue repertoire. Based on the F major scale.

Tomora – a tuning mode used in Senegambia. Based on the E-flat major scale.
-
Ardino/Sawta – a third tuning mode, used in Mali and Guinea. Based on the C major scale.

Listening and comparative analysis of traditional pieces:
Identifying the tunings used (Silaba, Tomora, and Ardino/Sawta) in the following repertoire:

Mansana Cissé by Lalo Keba Drame (Senegambia)

Nalésonko by Ballaké Sissoko (Mali)

Allalake by Lamine Cissokho (Senegal)

Lamine Cissokho comes from a prestigious lineage of Senegalese griots, including his great-uncle, the late Lalo Keba Drame. Based in Sweden, Lamine performs internationally. In recent years, he has been invited to renowned venues such as the Philharmonie de Paris, the Stockholm, Copenhagen, and Venice Jazz Festivals, the Edinburgh International Harp Festival, among many others.
He has collaborated with a range of artists, including Indian musician Manish Pingle, jazz pianist Olivier Hutman, and American bluesman Eric Bibb.
His kora playing is both innovative and unique, marked by exceptional technical dexterity.
It is this technique, along with the Mandingue repertoire and his ancestral heritage, that Lamine shares in the master classes he has been leading for several years, welcoming learners of all levels.
