Brazilian jazz – grooves, rhythm, improvisation & harmonies

OBJECTIVES

An introduction to Baden Powell’s grooves, which combine influences from classical music, jazz and Brazilian music (bossa nova, samba and choro). The workshop is based on the pedagogy of teacher and musician Marcel Powell, son of Baden Powell (1937-2000).

The aim is to stimulate musical practice in an organic way with a group of musicians.

GENERAL CONTENT

AREAS OF WORK :

Geographical, sociological, historical and cultural context of Brazilian music (grooves of Brazilian samba and its relationship to classical music and jazz)
The role of oral transmission in Brazilian music
Mechanism, articulation and detailed positioning of the 2 hands in the different samba rhythms on the guitar (+ strings)

BRAZILIAN GROOVE TECHNIQUE: ARRANGEMENTS & INTERPRETATION

Demonstration of how to create arrangements for solo, duo and trio strings, how to make the guitar stand out, application of the flamenco guitar.
Advice on how to interpret each song, looking for harmonic possibilities and techniques not yet used.
Improvisation in a solo arrangement creating parallel melodies, using the resources of modulations and neighbouring sonorities.

Marcel Powell will illustrate each topic with his instrument and show video extracts from his online course.

CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION

This workshop is open to musicians of all instruments (mainly strings) and all levels.

Marcel Powell is a ‘six-code guitar virtuoso’, according to Gilberto Gil. His musical universe immerses the listener in jazz improvisations and the world of Brazil, thanks to the guitarist’s signature style, instantly recognisable from the first chord. His father’s only pupil for 10 years, the virtuoso son follows in his father’s footsteps and delights audiences. Born in Paris in 1982, he has recorded twelve albums as a composer, including two with his father and his brother, the French-based pianist Philippe Powell. Now based in Rio de Janeiro, Marcel Powell is an extension of the musical expression of the Brazilian soul, claiming its Iberian, black and European ancestry.
