GENERAL OBJECTIVES

To perfect the practice of the kora and the knowledge and analysis of the Mandingo repertoire.

CONTENT

The role of the korafola in Manding culture from a historical and cultural perspective.

Work on how to tune the kora :

  • Silaba meaning “the great road”, the main tuning method for the kora. Used throughout the Mandingo repertoire. F major scale
  • Tomora, tuning mode. Tuning used in Senegambia. E-flat major scale
  • Ardino/Sawta, third tuning mode. Used in Mali and Guinea. C major scale

Listening to and comparative analysis of traditional pieces :

  • Repetition of the chords worked (Silaba, Tomora and Ardino/Sawta) in the following repertoire:
    – Mansana Cissé by Lalo Keba Drame (Senegambia)
    – Nalésonko by Ballake Sissoko (Mali)
    – Allalake by Lamine Cissokho (Senegal)

Analysis of the structure of a traditional piece :

  • Bamba Bodian by Lalo Keba Drame
  • Identifying the introduction, rhythmic cycles and improvisations.

Improvisation techniques :

  • Advice and examples by Lamine Cissokho
  • Individual work by the participant to construct an improvisation

Integrating a Western chord into traditional chords :

  • Discovering the new chord
  • Joint composition based on the elements worked on previously: traditional chords, structure of a traditional Mandingo piece on the kora, improvisation techniques and integration of a Western chord.

CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION

Age: adults
Minimum level: be able to tune your own kora, have a few months’ practice behind you.
Instrument: bring your own instrument or we can loan one to you

BIOGRAPHY

Lamine Cissokho comes from a long line of Senegalese griots, including his great uncle, the late Lalo Keba Drame. Based in Sweden, Lamine tours internationally. The Philharmonie de Paris, jazz festivals in Stockholm, Copenhagen and Venice, the Edinburgh Inter02national Harp Festival and many other prestigious venues have invited him to perform in recent years. He has also collaborated with Indian musicians Manish Pingle, jazz pianist Olivier Hutman and American bluesman Eric Bibb. His kora playing is innovative and unique, characterized by impressive technical dexterity.It is this technique, the Mandingo repertoire and his ancestral heritage that Lamine shares with his students in the master classes he has been running for several years, for learners of all levels.
